The trays are meticulously crafted using a combination of individual ceramic
tiles inset into an envelope of stained black ash wood. The sculptural design is inspired by the center’s iconic minimalist architecture and its intimate cacti landscaped courtyards,
juxtaposing art with nature.
The ceramic tile pieces are a mix of glazed, unglazed, textured, and smooth finishes, which laid together, form the building-inspired illustration. Carefully hand built, hand glazed and later fired in a two phase process, each individual piece showcases the skilled craftsmanship involved in its creation. Enveloping the ceramic pieces together, is a sculpted solid wood frame, which adds warmth and elegance to the design.
The trays would be an exclusive addition to the Art Jameel Shop, offering the Center’s visitors who appreciate its architecture and curation an opportunity to bring home a piece that not only embodies the spirit of the Art Jameel Center but also showcases the skill and craftsmanship of local artisans who created these trays. In addition to being practical serving pieces, the trays are also elegant conversation pieces, embodying the artistic nature of the Center and its mission.
About the Brand
Doodle and the Gang sisters, Mentalla and Asmaa Said set up their practice in 2022. The studio experiments with different forms and materials to create emotive objects and furniture pieces that breathe life and bring awareness to our surroundings. With a fascination of the past and exceptional rigour to explore the future, the sisters aim to create pieces that pay tribute to traditional craft combined with an idiosyncratic and contemporary approach. The first collection: Volume I includes furniture pieces hand built by local artisans as well as ceramic pieces handmade by the sisters themselves. The series was debuted at Downtown Design Dubai in November 2022. The collection was featured in renowned Art and Design publications such as Architectural Digest, Harper’s Bazaar and others. Their work is now on display at prestigious galleries in Paris, London and New York.
