It took eight months of research for the curators, Manal Khader and Gregory Buchakjian, to excavate the 160 photographs in this book—most of which have never been published before—from the 50,000 meticulously-numbered and labelled images of the artist’s archive. The publication, which is suffused with emotion, was realised in close collaboration with the artist.
About the Artist
After qualifying as an architect in London, Elkoury turned to photography, producing a report on daily life in Lebanon and his images appearing in several publications. In 1997, Elkoury co-founded the Beirut-based Arab Image Foundation, an organisation that seeks to archive and preserve photography from the region. The following year he moved to Turkey and produced an extensive photographic travelogue, the last of his exclusively photographic series.
