The Alchemy of Dyeing continues the Mindful Making series with a workshop aimed at reflecting on issues around chromophobia, textile-making and craft through the lens of the exhibition Pacita Abad : I Thought the Streets Were Paved with Gold. Pacita Abad’s travels significantly impacted her discourse, narratives and relationships, greatly influencing the techniques and materials she used in her work.

This workshop begins with a visit to the Dubai Textile Souk, where participants will be guided in exploring how trade within the region impacts the colours harbored for natural dyeing and remedy-making.

Following the souk excursion, participants will tour the Pacita Abad : I Thought the Streets Were Paved with Gold exhibition in conversation with Nadine El-Khoury, Assistant Curator, before learning how to bundle dye their own pieces of silk using dyestuff from the souk.

This session will be led in English. Pre-registration and payment is encouraged as spots are limited.

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to the Souk and back to the Centre for the workshop.

This Art Jameel programme is part of an ongoing series that looks at the intersection between art and wellness.

Jameel Arts Centre’s Mindful Making series launched in September 2021 with the goal of to the forefront the art of old-fashioned hands-on making, with benefits ranging from a slow-down in pace and the single pointed concentration characteristic of meditation, to the creative and now-rare sensory stimulation our daily lives often lack.

The Alchemy of Dyeing is an immersive research platform and workshop conceived by fashion designer Mehru Khan and artist Nahla Tabbaa that dives into the alchemy of colour making, urban foraging, textile dyeing, chromophobia, taste-making and other complexities around organic dyeing.

The research undertaken explores and maps local material, plants and pigments available for dyeing practices, as well as different methods of dyeing alchemically. The workshops combine theory, discussions, one-on-one crits, demonstrations, field trips and assignments. As a result, participants familiarise themselves with the history of selected colours, colour extraction techniques, fabric selections, logbook-making and finally move into creating a final piece and unpacking its relevance within the region and trend forecasting.

With a teaching approach that is fluid, discursive and generative, both Mehru and Nahla see themselves as teachers and learners, and see this as an opportunity to cross pollinate, collaborate and contribute to each other’s practices.
