Combined with photographs captured and compiled by photographer and long-time Dubai resident Jalal Abuthina, this book also features a historical introduction to the area by renowned urban historian and author Yasser Elsheshtawy. Elsheshtawy, who curated the UAE Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Biennale, has written extensively about the circumstances and dynamics surrounding Dubai’s rapid urbanisation.
Memories of Satwa includes rare images of residents and parts of Satwa that have been documented over the past decade, with some of the areas featured now completely demolished, such as parts of the Emirati neighbourhood of Al Shabia.
All text in Memories of Satwa has been translated into Arabic and Russian.
