Mehdi Moutashar is the joint prize winner of the Jameel Prize 5, on view at Jameel Arts Centre from April 25 to September 14, 2019.
About the Artist
Mehdi Moutashar’s art lies at the confluence of two artistic traditions, the western heritage of geometric abstraction and the Islamic aesthetic tradition of geometrical order and lines. His art is a radical, geometrical abstraction with figures that are never enclosed inside the limits of a contour but open, fragmentary and constantly shifting.
About The Jameel Prize
The Jameel Prize is an international award for contemporary art and design inspired by Islamic tradition. The biennial prize, which began in 2009, was conceived after the renovation of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Jameel Gallery of Islamic Art, which opened in July 2006 to present the rich artistic heritage of the Islamic world. The prize aims to raise awareness of the thriving interaction between contemporary practice and this great historical heritage and to broaden understanding of Islamic culture and its place in the world.
