Composed of text by Rasha Salti and photography by Ziad Antar, Beirut Bereft: The Architecture of the Forsaken and Map of the Derelict reveals the relationship between social and physical architecture in postwar Lebanon. This collaboration between Antar and Salti started out after an encounter in 2006 when both discovered that they were exploring abandoned and functionless buildings scarred by the traces of war and signs of a failing state. In this book, the reader encounters a cartography of 57 abandoned buildings alongside a personal retelling of a society’s attempt to recover from a domestic and sectarian civil war.
