From manufacturing to circulation as well as technical progress, the book highlights the many aspects of this familiar material, which is now being replaced by digital technology in all aspects of our daily lives. By exploring the different plants from which it originates, as well as the numerous aspects from which its production emanates, the diversity of the artworks on display invites the public to discover the multiple uses of paper as a medium for creativity, ideas, and exchange over the centuries and throughout cultures.
With artworks from French collections, particularly works from the Musée du Louvre, Musée Guimet, Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Centre Georges-Pompidou. This book and exhibition are also an opportunity to showcase local contemporary artists as well as international contemporary creations on display from the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Sharjah Art Foundation, Goesan Museum, and the Cultural Institute of Korea.
About the Authors
Xavier Salmon is a director at the Department of Drawings and Prints, at the Louvre Museum.
Victor Hundsbuckler is curator at the Department of Drawings and Prints, at the Louvre Museum. He is in charge of French, Italian and Spanish drawings of the 17th century. Before 2018, he was responsible for the historical collections of the Monnaie de Paris, where he led the project of a new museum inaugurated in 2017. In 2019, at the Louvre museum in Paris, he curated the exhibition devoted to the Italian Drawings from the Mariette Collection. He also teaches History of Drawing at the Ecole du Louvre. Beyond his expertise in old masters drawings, his interests direct him particularly towards contemporary art.
