In September 1975, Sudanese modernist Ibrahim El-Salahi was wrongfully accused of involvement in an anti-government coup and imprisoned without trial for six months in Khartoum’s notorious Kober Prison. During the weeks of house arrest that followed his release, he created his Prison Notebook — a sketchbook of pen-and-ink drawings, prose, and poetry that both recorded and transcended his experience behind bars.

This publication presents a facsimile of the original notebook alongside excerpts from El-Salahi’s memoirs, a contextual essay by art historian Salah M. Hassan examining the political and social climate of the time, and contemporary reflections by the artist. Together, these elements form both an intimate personal document and a powerful record of resilience, vision and artistic innovation.
